DOWRY, NORMS, AND HOUSEHOLD FORMATION: A Case Study From North PortugalFaculty of Letters, University ofPorto, Portugal The study uses a data base of 28 parishes in northern Portugal at the begin ning of the seventeenth century to analyze the situation of young couples in terms of household composition, residential patterns, and inheritance rules. These matters are linked to cultural factors such as marital and generational relations and an attempt is made to explain the functioning of the conjugal fund and the roles of family members independent of the social and economic characteristics of the couples.
